When you strap a child onto your bicycle there are some safety issues that you want to be sure and cover off, besides the obvious like everyone should wear a helmet. When you attach a carrier on to your bicycle, you have some issues that need to be examined before you and your baby pedal off into the sunset. It is important to realize that having the added weight of a baby on your bicycle will change where the center of gravity is. It’s vital that you have a good quality, strong bicycle with a sound frame, at the very least; to insure both you and your baby will be safe. Cheryl Elmo is the national examiner for a respected bicycle NGO working to help make sure that cyclists remain safe and sound and don’t forget some simple safety guidelines. “You should make sure that you are a strong rider as the centre of gravity is higher and how your bicycle operates and feels may alter,” said Cheryl Elmo. “Make sure that when you start out, that you are paying attention, don’t reach around to grab something or get out something, that is often when the bicycle will tip over and can be dangerous,” said Cheryl Elmo. Choose the ride that you take carefully, and try to stay away from busy roads as often they have a lot of confusion that make cycling with a baby on board tricky and hazardous. “If you are able to take quieter side routes it is likely the better thing for you and for your baby,” said Cheryl Elmo.
