Tips For Cycling With A Child On Board

By: Mike Clarkson

When you secure a baby onto your bike there are some safety concerns that you want to be sure and address, besides the obvious like everyone should wear a helmet.
When you mount a seat on to your bike, you have some things that should be examined before you and your toddler pedal off into the sunset.

It is important to realize that the added weight of a toddler on your bike will effect where the center of gravity is. It’s important that you have a high quality, strong bike with a robust frame, at the very least; to insure both you and your toddler will be safe.

Jonquil Williams is the national examiner for a respected bicycle NGO working to help make sure that riders remain safe and don’t forget some simple safety guidelines.

“You should make sure that you are a capable rider as the centre of gravity is higher and how your bike handles and responds could alter,” said Jonquil Williams.
“Ensure that when you get going, that you are paying attention, don’t reach around to grab something or get out something, that is often when the bike will tip over and can be tricky,” said Jonquil Williams.

Select the route that you take carefully, and try to avoid busy arterials as often they have a lot of confusion that make riding with a toddler on board tricky and hazardous. “If you can take quieter side routes it is likely the best thing for you and for your toddler,” said Jonquil Williams.
