The past of Murcia has been a absorbing tradition of crop growing, trade and INVASION. From primitive times (500+ B.C.) Murcia's original population - Iberian tribes - had already trading ties with the Phoenicians and Greeks. Next Hannibal Barca and his masses from Carthage conquered the area founding Carthago Nova, which these days is the popular sea port of Cartagena. Then, inescapably came the Romans and in the 5th Century the Visigoths (a German race) who conquered all of Spain under Euric then to be superceded by the Moors in 711. The lovely city of Murcia (then called Mursiya) was founded in 825 A.D by The Caliph of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman II. Founded on the site of an historic Roman Colony there are still many Moorish touches there not least in the towering City walls. The 11th century brought civil war & the Caliphate was defeated by native Spaniards to create an independent kingdom, which included (at its height) part of the modern areas of Alicante & Almeria. Calmer times followed until 1243 when Alfonso X of Castilla & Leon re-conquered Murcia and the surrounding localities. Savage oppression forced the largely Moslem community to become Christian. All 20 mosques were converted into Christaian churches. The city was blessed with lots of elaborate urban palaces, ornate churches and of course the centrepiece was the stunning rococo cathedral. All this affluence was mostly paid for by the burgeoning silk and cultivating industries. At the peak of Murcia's affluence and development Napoleon Bonaparte spoilt the party by sacking and looting the Province in 1810. Unfortunately there was then an epidemic of plague followed by Cholera.. Then Murcia fell into gradual decline until the 20th Century when Murcia could only claim minor City status. Murcia suffered terrible violence during the Civil War in 1936 and too many stunning monuments and churches were lost. Mucia's decline also occurred as the lucrative silk market lost it's competitiveness against the offensive of man made fibres such as nylon. The city is still a very attractive and beautiful destination having become a University City with a modern vibrant atmosphere but not losing a host of architectural interest. The latest thing in the story of Murcia has been the building of 37 residential golf courses at the time of writing with lots more to follow. Multi-billion pound Company Polaris World has invested drastically in Murcia and is ensuring all it's resorts water self-sufficient by producing fresh water from sea water. The monetary welfare of Murcia City is assured.
