The Value of an Email Blacklist Check

Successful delivery of your emails is something that may require more work that you realize. If you are not already utilizing diagnostic email delivery software and monitoring your lists, you might be surprised to learn how often emails are blocked, bounced, or reported as spam. There are a number of tools at your disposal, such as an email blacklist check and a spam check, that can be used to determine your delivery rate and any hindrances affecting it. Devoting the time and energy to monitor this yourself, or having someone else do this for you can vastly improve the success of any email marketing campaign.

In the course of monitoring your email delivery, if you notice that you are being blocked by a certain ISP or from specific domains, then you've been blacklisted. Contacting the list manager to discuss how to get off the list is your best option. There are numerous causes of blacklisting, and far too many to get into now. Sample causes might include having a high number of bounces on your list (you should remove those promptly) or sending frequent bulk batches of email from a non-whitelisted ISP.

Just as you can run a email blacklist check to see if you are being blacklisted, you can also do a spam check to see what percentage of your emails are being marked as spam. Providers will automatically put emails with suspicious or common words in the title and message into spam boxes, and users have learned to recognize these. No matter how true it may be, or how excited you are about the special deal you have, a title like "Special Offer!!! Get Free Products Now!!!" is unlikely to inspire anything other than annoyance and the unwanted SPAM reaction from providers and individuals alike. Other issues that can prevent your emails from landing in inboxes includes scripts that cannot be read and non-PDF attachments.

Knowing the rules to play by can help keep you in the game, so make sure that you're playing nice. You'll need to do this with your customers as well as their service providers. In the case of single opt-in lists, many people don't realize or remember that they signed up for an email list, and hit the spam button when they suddenly find themselves getting emails and newsletters. A confirmed opt-in can eliminate this problem. You might choose to include details such as the sign-up date on the confirmation email, to remind the recipient when they signed up. Once they've confirmed their interest, you also want to assure them of your privacy policy and inform them how to contact you and how to unsubscribe. Include this information in every subsequent email- when people can't easily figure out how to unsubscribe, they are likely to mark the emails as spam. The easier you make it for your recipients, the easier you'll make it for yourself.
