What is it about cheap webhosting that makes it so cheap? What are the sacrifices involved with getting this cheap price? Nearly all cheap webhosting options are shared webhosting. This fact alone means that you are sacrificing a number of options in terms of reliability, speed and security.

Multiple cheap, shared hosting packages share the same server. Therefore if one of the other users does something with their hosting that modifies the operation of the server such as creating an incorrectly programmed CRON job that continues to pull resources away from the server, your site(s) and everyone elses will be affected by it. This could mean that your websites could be down for an unknown amount of time due to the ignorance of a single user. Since there could be dozens of users sharing hosting on one server the odds are against you when it comes to possible crashes.

Sharing the server with a number of users also means that the amount of available bandwidth is split between all users. If one of the sharing users hosts a high traffic site, and/or a website that contains lots of video or flash that takes a long time to load, your website will suffer the consequences. If it was your intention to host one of these sites yourself, you will not want to do it on shared web hosting.

If one of the users that shares your server has security flaws within their site there is a good chance that any damage that may be done will be done to the entire server, not any of that user's individual sites. The resulting limited bandwidth and crashes will be suffered by your site(s) as well.

Cheap web hosting is a great option if your intention is to host small content based sites and you are not worried about possible downtime or slow loading times. Just keep in mind that cheap, shared web hosting is not always synonymous with affordable webhosting.
