The modern wedding today seems to be more about personal preference rather than tradition. In the press there are stories of couples hiring tanks and even pink Cadillacs as wedding cars. Personally, a classically styled Rolls Royce is far more preferable but in the modern world this seems to be an increasingly unpopular choice. It is not just the choice of cars however; weddings today seem more to be about who can be more showy and garish rather than the sanctity of marriage and the importance of the day itself. Having a specific theme for a wedding seems to be an increasingly common trend. These themes rather disturbingly can go from the outlandish country and western to even Disney characters; unfortunately these situations sound more like a fancy dress party rather than an important ceremony. Whatever this particular writer's standpoint however it is clear that people are entitled to have any type of wedding they like, whether this is in on horseback dressed like Clint Eastwood or in the traditional black tie, it is simply a matter of choice. The most savvy wedding car companies have been clever enough to accommodate the growing trend for individual choices for cars. By stocking cars such as American classics and even VW Beetles they are supplying a demand in the wedding industry. The traditional Rolls Royce adorned with ribbons, and tape seems to be in a minority today, a sad state of affairs but one endemic of the society we live in. Increasingly however a garish pink limo is more preferable than timeless classics. I know people who are getting married and one of these is my brother; after speaking with him in detail he to has been swayed by the idea of having a particular theme to his wedding. His personal choice is for a Back to the Future themed day, complete with arrival at the church in a DeLorean. Unsurprisingly his wife to be is not too impressed with this idea but at least it passed some time in the pub while we were discussing the big event. This may have just been a moment of jest but within it there is some serious points. There are now a number of companies who are happy to provide film and television cars for wedding days. Of these cars personal favourites would include the A Team van and even the black Trans Am from eighties cult television programme Knightrider. While these may not all be the brides choice there are cars from films such as Grease that are sure to entice the bride into hosting a themed ceremony. Whether this form of transport is romantic is disputable but at least it is fun. This is the crux of the issue, while in the past a wedding was about dedication one's life to another person, today it seems as if it is the perfect excuse to hold a massive party. Certainly with the expense of the modern wedding it is understandable that couples want to have a little fun when they are spending such a gargantuan figure. While this article has provided an insight into the trends of the modern wedding it is not been an attempt to castigate people for choosing to have fun on their special day. As previously stated the choice is up to the couple in question, should they wish to have a ceremony that is akin to an eighties television show or cult film is wholly up to them. It is hoped that the reader has not just seen this as a rant against modernity but instead the view of a spectator on the trends that are encroaching on traditional ceremonies.
