The Flavor of Luxury in Macau

By: Gregory Smyth

Food is something that truly unites the world. Eating is an activity that is common to all of us, and one of the true markers of our globalised world is the fact that croissants can be had in both France and China, sushi is now more Californian than Japanese, and yiros are the midnight takeaway of choice not only in Greece, but throughout Australia.

If you are travelling to Macau, one of the most lasting impressions you will have of the country is its cuisine. This former Portuguese settlement still has plenty of Spanish inspired restaurants, all with an unusual and exciting Asian flair. Here we look at the best places to eat in Macau, and where to rest your head after a stomach-stretching meal.

Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 not only offers some of Macau's most expertly crafted cuisine, you can rest your head right on the premises, after a blissfully tiring meal. This luxury Macau hotel's dining showpiece is Le Mistral, a French-themed restaurant to match the French design amenities.

If you are staying at the hotel, you can experience a little of the tastebud-tempting treats in the hotel's room service menu - and come downstairs to experience the real thing. While French is the accent, there is a wide variety of international dishes available.

Contemporary presentation and ingredients, along with classic flavour combinations mean there is something to make everyone feel at home, yet spoilt in the Sofitel's signature restaurant.

Another exciting part of the Le Mistral dining experience at this luxury Macau hotel is the interactive cooking stations. No longer is every part of the cooking cloistered out the back of the restaurant, sheltered from view - you can see and smell your dish as it is being prepared.

You can also work up quite an appetite for it before it gets to you! Sofitel Macau offers a haute cuisine package for the gastronomic, which includes splendid accommodation along with a full buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant, a 3 course set dinner, as well as local Macanese snacks throughout the day.

If you take up the great value package from the Sofitel Macau, you will still need somewhere to eat lunch - and if the swimming pool and fitness center at the hotel don't offer enough fresh air, venture out to Largo do Senado, on the main square.

For those that relate best to a country by tasting what the locals eat, this area has the greatest concentration of Macanese restaurants, and is close to Ponte 16.

Platao is a fabulous European style restaurant, originally a military officers club for the Portuguese colonials. Now that the troops have gone home, the restaurant is very popular with the locals and offers an extremely well-balanced fusion. Try the bacalhau (codfish) - Macau's most famous Portuguese dish.

It comes in various delicious forms, like Fried Bacalhau balls, Bacalhau with rice, and steamed Bacalhau with seafood. In all of these Bacalhau dishes, the fish undergoes extensive preparation, including soaking and marinating, to remove salt from the dried imported meat.

Solmar and A Lorcha are two other delectable restaurants in downtown Macau - Solmar is actually the oldest Portuguese restaurant in the city, with the famous signature dish of African chicken, cooked by long-time chef Yang. A Lorcha is rumoured to serve the best paella in the country, and also has a mouth-watering dessert menu
