Signature Sundowners - Experience Macau by the Sip

By: Gregory Smyth

You will never find a restaurant that serves food, but not drinks - yet strangely enough, you will find many restaurant reviews that talk about the cuisine, but not the refreshments! Here we look at Macanese cuisine's forgotten cousin - the large range of international beverages available on the peninsula, with a signature exotic Macau twist.

Macau is such an international haven that many types of drinks have come to personify the peninsula - Portuguese wines for Portuguese dining, exotic South American cocktails, and of course, coffee to accompany French cuisine, are all expertly created and served in Macau. Where can you find and enjoy Macau's more refreshing side?

If you are a visitor to Macau and you have had the good sense (and research skills!) to be staying at the new Sofitel Macau complex at Ponte 16, you don't need to go any further than Le Rendezvous, the hotel's coffee shop and bar alongside the contemporary dining mecca that is Le Mistral. At Le Rendezvous you can enjoy vinho verde, one of the drinks that captures the spirit of Macau, distils, bottles and pours it into a glass for you to enjoy!

Have this fresh wine with tapas at Sofitel Macau's Le Rendezvous. It is not quite a semi-sparkling wine, but has a definite zest that leaves your mouth entranced and more than a little enlivened! The name translates literally to green wine - but this is more of a metaphor for its youthful, springtime flavour and character than the color; it is actually yellowish, like most white wines. Le Rendezvous is open for palate refreshment from noon til 1am.

If you have chosen to stay at Sofitel Macau, you can also enjoy some of the hotel's fine taste in wines with the Exclusively Yours package. This includes a bottle of champagne and private welcome upon arrival. Perfect for making you and your special someone feel that you're worth more than all the chips in all of Macau's many casinos! Complement your welcome drinks with one of the delectable Macanese dining or contemporary dining choices at the hotel's international restaurant, Le Mistral.

Beer is fast becoming another Macanese favourite - the people of Macau are hardworking, and need to balance it all out with some intensive relaxation and fun! While French cuisine, one of the popular styles of Macau's contemporary dining scene, is better suited to wine, the traditional Portuguese food goes well with a refreshing lager. Macau's party atmosphere also goes well with a refreshing lagere, as well as an ale or stout, for the matter!

Check out the Docas waterfront area, similar to Sofitel Macau's Ponte 16, for some great bar-hopping. Close to the Wynn Casino Resort, there are dozens of restaurants and clubs. If you are staying nearby in the Mandarin Oriental or the Emperor Hotel, you can enjoy a beer alongside a personally chosen song - most of these hotel's performers take requests.

If wine is French signature liquid, then coffee must belong to Italy and Macau does the country of passion's traditional drink with flair and gusto at Pizzeria Toscana, on Avenida da Amizade. Despite the Pizzeria title, there is a great selection of Italian food, and some of the best coffee in the city to round it out. The venue is as much coffee shop as it is contemporary dining facility. Espressos, lattes, cappuccinos, if you relish the rich exotic flavour of a good Arabica, Macau's best place to enjoy them is definitely here.

If your tastebuds are just as enthralled by liquid sensations as solid, Macau certainly does not disappoint.
