Should You Sell Your Clothes, or Just Throw Them Away?

By: Victor Epand

How do you know if your old clothes should be passed along or just thrown away? We all have shirts or pants and other outfits that we don't wear anymore. It might be cause we don't fit them, or because we just stopped liking them. Regardless of the reason why we don't wear them, the issue is what we should do with them now. Here are some things to consider when trying to decide what to do with your old clothes.

When you should sell your old clothes

Sell your old clothes if you have never worn them. Clothing that has never been worn has a like new value, even if it is a couple of years old. If you have kept the items too long to return them to the store, selling is a good way to get at least some of your money back. Why not sell the clothes that just never fit you?

You can also sell clothes that did fit you, but you did not wear often. Perhaps a fancy dress or a tuxedo, that you probably won't wear again, would make a fine sale item. Maybe you thought you really like a certain style of shirt, and bought three of them. After wearing them a few times, you realized you really only needed one. Go ahead and sell the extra ones. If they are still in good condition, even though you wore them a few times, there is no reason why they can't be resold.

When not to sell your old clothes

On the other hand, you might have clothes that are damaged. Perhaps you bought an outfit that was the wrong size, and you ripped it terribly while trying to squeeze it on. Unless you can repair it to like to condition, just toss it out and count it as a loss. Similarly, if there are very noticeable stains that don't come out in the wash, it might turn buyers away. Just throw the item away or use it as a rag.

Missing buttons, broken zippers, and ruined seams are more reasons not to try and sell your old clothes. If the old outfits you have are dingy from age, they might not be worth a sale attempt either. Put these items together for a donation to a clothing drive, or just get rid of them.

Now you know when to sell, and when to just give it away. Take a look at your old clothing and see what you might be able to sell.
