John Holmes was born on August 8, 1944 and died March 13, 1988 from complications of AIDS. He was better known as John C. Holmes or Johnny Wadd, after the lead character he played in a series of films. John Holmes was one of the most influential and idolized porn stars of all time, and it is thought that he had appeared in more than 2,500 pornographic movies, including one or two gay features. His claim to fame was his large penis, which was thought at one time to have been the biggest in the porno industry. Its exact size, for some reason though, is unknown. In 1989, Rolling Stone magazine wrote a giant article on him, and he has been the inspiration for two Hollywood movies, Boogie Nights and Wonderland.

John Holmes was born in Ashville, Ohio. His father had walked out on his family when John was four years old. His mother, Mary, married Harold Holmes a few years later and changed her childrens surnames to Holmes, since John Holmes had been born John Curtis Estes. His new stepfather was an alcoholic who would come home drunk, stumbling around and vomiting all over, even on the children. John Holmes mother divorced him, and they moved to Ohio, lived on welfare, and then his mother married again to a man who would frequently beat John Holmes and his siblings.

John Holmes later enlisted in the army, had a variety of jobs, and in 1964 when he was an ambulance driver, he met and married a nurse named Sharon Gebenini.
John Holmes became a forklift driver at a meat packing warehouse in California. The job, however, lead to severe health problems, including the collapse of his right lung on three separate occasions. One night while at a poker game, while John Holmes was in the bathroom at a urinal, a still photographer noticed his large penis size and brought the idea to him to try pornography. In the 1960s, John Holmes did magazine work and an occasional 8 mm loop, keeping his work secret from his wife. There was no Internet, VHS tapes, or DVDs. In the early days, the first few dozen 8 mm rarely named him, and if they did, he was given a name that was nowhere near his real name. In these early years of his porn career, he was known as The Sultan of Smut.

Some of his best successes are Deep Throat in 1972, The Devil in Miss Jones in 1973, and Behind the Green Door in 1972. In 1973, his popularity began to rise with a porno series about a private investigator named Johnny Wadd, and by 1978, he was reportedly making $3,000 a day as a porno star.
