Read the personal profiles. At least one online dating site requires a background check on all its clients. This is a good tool to weed out the possibly dangerous and dishonest, and those who aren�t seriously searching for a date.

Not only do keywords and specific searches get you closer to a person that�s compatible to you, but it cuts down the number of hits you�ll get on your search. Millions of people use the Internet every day, and a large portion of them are single and searching. If you don�t specify what you want, you�re likely to end up with more hits on your search than you have time to weed through. That�s no help.

In addition, there are millions of single people utilizing these myriad of online dating sites. Do NOT do a general search. You�ll get millions of hits, and that�s not going to help you. Know what characteristics are important to you in a partner and through keywords or questionnaires, search on those parameters.

That may sound silly, but if you�re a meat and potatoes kind of person, you may not mesh well with a vegetarian. Are you career-driven, or more laid back? Do you sing in the shower, hate dogs, put your feet on the coffee table or leave your socks on the bedroom floor?

Try just one or two keywords and see how quickly the numbers of hits are reduced. Continue utilizing your important keywords until the results reach a manageable number. As mentioned above, know what you want and ask for it. Sure, opposites attract, and cultural and religious differences can often be overcome, but is that the type of relationship you want?

The key is to be completely honest with yourself. Consider the following couple: each was from a different religious background. Their friends and family worried they wouldn�t last, that their religious differences would cause strife. This couple has been married for over 20 years, and is very happy. They knew the possible difficulties when they went in, and faced them. Consider another couple, of the same religion. They assumed their religion wouldn�t be a problem, but their marriage didn�t last, because she was devoted to her faith and he wasn�t.

Bottom line: when you search for dates online, look for sites that help protect your safety. Then know what you want and ask for it!
