Gay Porn, from the 1980s to Now

By: Kelly Renaul

After the transitory period of the wild and rowdy 1980s, gay porn settled into a groove in the 1990s. The previous decade turned the industry upside down, with the proliferation of the VCR enabling just about anyone to own an extensive (and affordable) gay porn collection. The market was flooded with low budget gay porn, since just about anyone could cough up the cash to get a VHS camcorder.

Also, because it became normal to own gay porn and watch it in the comfort of your own home, watching the stuff in theatres did not seem to make as much sense as it used to. Because of the decline in regular attendance, movie theatres became a popular place to engage in risky sexual behavior. This combined with several other factors, helped the AIDS virus spread like wildfire.

In the 1990s, however, the gay porn industry once again transformed itself into something entirely new. Directory Kristen Bjorn, a former gay porn star himself, began his own company and started directing and producing films. Because he was a professional photographer, the quality of the movies he made were amazing, and other gay porn houses began struggling to keep up. The public became addicted to the high quality stuff, and low budget amateur gay porn began to suffer as a result.

Kirsten Bjorn also began experimenting with niche and fetish markets, something that helped to drastically increase the sales of his gay porn videos. The growth that the gay porn industry saw in the 1990s was unprecedented, and a whole interactive and complex subculture was born out of it. There were even gay porn critics, like the influential Mikey Skee.

Moving forward to the 21st century, the gay porn industry has continued to evolve. Now that reliable HIV tests have been developed and the ways to avoid catching the disease are widely known, there has been a resurgence of bareback porn. While in the 1990s where most of the gay porn involved hardcore gay sex of the safe variety (and really, how hardcore is safe sex, anyway?), these days more studios are avoiding condom use altogether.

Also, with the proliferation of the Internet gay porn production houses have found a whole new way to market their wares to the eager viewing public. Gay porn stars are more popular than ever, and gay porn enthusiasts now have a way to follow their favorites every move.
