Although many people think that adult videos are a relatively new invention, the truth of the matter is that they have been around ever since video cameras have been invented. In fact, before the video camera was invented, there were pornographic pictures and drawings that were passed around.

The first adult video ever filmed is widely considered to be A LEcu dOr ou la none auberge, which was made in France in the year 1908. Patrick Robertson, the man who wrote the book Film Facts, describes it as a ten minute film which begins with a woman masturbating alone in her bedroom, and progresses to scenes of her with a man performing sex, fellatio and anal penetration. That is pretty hardcore, considering the overall prudishness of the time.

In the 1920s, adult videos were all over the silent movie era. Since this was the time before VCRs, DVD players and home computers and adult videos were still illegal in the United States (as well as abroad), they were most often shown in brothels. Because adult videos were illegal, and those who made and distributed them were open to prosecution, the whole adult video industry was driven underground. Because of the clandestine nature of the industry, it can be reasonably assumed that most of the adult videos made prior to 1950 are permanently lost.

Surprisingly, Denmark was the first country to totally legalize adult videos. Soon after they became legal, producers started making theatrical full length feature films. What made these adult videos unique was that they starred very famous actors and actresses, despite the fact that they were hardcore and showed penetration. This was something that was extremely uncommon at the time because hardcore porn was still viewed as being somewhat taboo. Most mainstream actors and actresses did not want to be a part of something that could impact their reputation in a negative way.

The United States did not legalize adult videos until the 1970s, and even then it was an uneasy situation with lots of grey legal areas. In 1972, the movie Deep Throat took the entire country by storm. It was critically acclaimed and was shown in special movie theaters that only played adult videos. Because of the huge success that the movie enjoyed, much of the stigma associated with adult videos went away. The actors and actresses in the film were socially accepted like never before, even giving rise to the phrase porno chic, which signaled the cultural trend.
